Old School Beliefs – Joe’s Journal

old school beliefs from Joe's Journal

We operate in a constantly changing world due to technology and the communication it fosters. The changes in business that result are exciting, and that innovation empowers us to set the stage for the future.

Change is inevitable, but participation is optional. Yet, I still believe some old school beliefs are valid to build upon your foundation. Here are those bed rock beliefs I embrace:

  • – You can tell a lot about a person by how they treat service staff. Next time you interview someone, take them to lunch and tell the waiter to bring the wrong dish. How the person responds will tell you all you need to know.
  • – You don’t need to weigh in on things you don’t know about. Uneducated opinions benefit no one.
  • – Hard work isn’t overrated. You have to work hard if you want to get ahead. There are no exceptions on this one.
  • – Show up and be present. It takes little effort, yet is foundational to success in leadership and building culture.
  • – Tell people what you are going to do publicly. It creates accountability and when you accomplish it, people remember what you said and that you delivered.
  • – Do the stuff that your boss hates doing. It’ll build your skill sets, fill the gaps in the business, and solidify your position in the company. The business’ success and your personal success is a symbiotic relationship.
  • – Wake up early. You don’t have to be an early riser to be successful, but you rarely see an early riser that isn’t winning.
  • – Write more handwritten notes. In a word of email and text, stand out from the crowd and be different.
  • – Embrace the friction. Friction causes growth. You remove friction, you remove growth.
  • – Find more people that spar intellectually. You have friends that validate you, you need more people to challenge you.
  • – Never bet against a person that constantly shows up day in and day out, tenacity is a dead trait in people.
  • – Stay Curious and Be Kind.
