The predecessor to action is thought. To have great actions, you must have great thoughts – and to have great thoughts, you must have an amazing mindset. This concept might seem obvious for those of us that enjoy saving time, acting, and getting stuff done, yet if we don’t have the best mindsets our results will only be nominal compared to stupendous.
You may now be asking yourself, “What mindset journey do I need to cause impactful change?”
Courage. Change is uncomfortable. It gets messy. Change has emotions tied to it which, like riding a roller coaster, has peaks and valleys. The first step to change is having the courage to lean into the uncomfortable and know that it is temporary. The ability to step back and identify the need for change is the start.
Values. This is what you believe in. This is what you cherish. When your life (personal or professional) doesn’t align with your vision, change is necessary. aligning your values along with the future benefits of change is what can help motivate us to act. Standing up for what we value supersedes the short-term pain of being uncomfortable.
Action. You gotta DO something. Courage and identifying our values to motivate the need for change is the hard part. This internal struggle is all mental though, meaning when we get past that part, we must move to action. The critical part of action is developing the plan. Map out your steps so that you have clarity and then get to action. At this step, it’s less thinking, more action in order to reach your goals.
Change. The hard part is already done. You got through the “mental jungle” which is the point where most fail when it comes to enacting change. Now, it is just a matter of time. Remember, most change isn’t immediate, it’s gradual. Stick to your action plan and watch the metrics that indicate change closely. One day you’ll wake up and the change will slap you in the face – and all it took was the courage to lean into the uncomfortable.
