Are you a time teller or a clock builder?
This question hit home with the current book I’m reading, “Built to Last”. The essence of the question is are you the only one capable of telling time because of your unique skills or are you building a clock that can provide time for everyone.
We operate in an industry that rewards individual, dynamic performers. We have a short sales cycle, repeatable tasks, and with enough individual drive you can have a successful self-employed venture. There are a ton of spectacular performers in real estate and their success should be recognized.
Yet, what happens when this individual moves on or reigns back their time? The success slows and eventually the business dies. A business that continues to grow and move forward, no matter the leader, shows it is built to last. The foundation has been established and systems are operating so anyone can plug it and provide value. This allows the business to provide value to the clients it serves and secondarily allows the business owners and employees to thrive.
The difference between self-employed and owning a business is whether the venture operates without the heavy reliance on one individual. So, are you telling everybody what to do and their success is based on you? Or can your team operate and excel without your guidance because you’ve built a sustainable venture?
